Giulio Grasso of Cà del Baio has been named “Viticulturist of the Year 2016” by the Gambero Rosso.
They describe him as “a man who lives the rhythms of nature and countryside practically in symbiosis with his vineyards“.
We are proud to represent Giulio’s wines here in NY. This award is well-deserved for Giulio’s long standing dedication to his land and his family.
Giulio is the fourth generation Grasso to run the Cà del Baio estate: a winery which represents great love for the land, respect for its origins and a continuous care for the vines.
“I have been working in the vineyard since I was 10”, explains Giulio. “I didn’t feel like studying but I really wanted to drive the tractor! However my father didn’t allowed me to become a full-time vigneron until I turned 18”.
It’s been over 33 vintages since that day!
The Grasso’s farm their land using “agricultura integrata” (promiscuous agriculture) in which other crops are planted throughout the vines to create a healthy and sustainable ecosystem. Minimal chemicals are used on the soil and the winemaking generally uses native ambient yeasts.
Giulio accepts this award with happiness and humbleness, thanking his family for the support and the oenologist Beppe Caviola for the continuous exchange of experience and knowledge.
